J-Dub Vinylcast 007 - Mark Farina - Mushroom Jazz 13 August 8 1994

To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Mark Farina's seminal Mushroom Jazz series, number 7 in my vinylcast series is a throwback to a time when Mushroom Jazz was a cassette series sold in record stores notably Gramaphone Records in Chicago. I have a small library of Mark's classic cassette's and this is definitely one of my favorites. So happy I could share it on the cusp of the release of MJ8, Mark's latest proper Mushroom Jazz release hitting the streets July 22. Cheers and enjoy.

Vinylcast 014 - Mark Farina Downtempo Forest 6 - 1996

The Mushroom Jazz series is well known among lovers of downtempo beats as the signature sound of Mark Farina, but simultaneous to the creation of that famous project was his Downtempo Forest series of mixtapes. This is number 6 from 1996 featuring KRS-One, Fat Joe, Common, Mad Skillz, and some seriously funky acid jazz wafting through the mix. One to chill on. Enjoy!

The grand finale of my Downtempo Forest Trilogy comes correct with my favorite mix of the series. Farina takes you on a deep, funky, jazzy, mystical, and psychedelic trip through the mind of a true mixmaster and crate digger. I wish I had a track listing because I would love quite a few of these tracks for my own collection! Hope you enjoy.

Birthday Get Down March 25 2016 Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs Set

This is basically the set I played at Mark Farina's Birthday Get Down at the Hard Rock Hotel in Palm Springs, CA. JDub Vinylcast 002

Spring Fever is in the air and so is the love of house. This mix of vinyl classics, secret dubs, and sweet vocals was put together not for the cliched, sappy, rom com fantasy believing many but for the chosen few, the poets who speak with their feet, and those who know the truth of music never dies but grows stronger with the passage of time. Cheers

13. J-Dub Vinylcast 009 - Spencer Kincy - It Is What It Is Side B

J-Dub Vinylcast 009 - Spencer Kincy - It Is What It Is Side B

Spencer Kincy AKA Gemini recorded this mix for Boomtown Records of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada circa 1999(?). Spencer, as a producer and a DJ, had the innate ability to build soundscapes with deep, minimal, soulful tracks and also lay down some super heavy beats with a tribal/tech edge that would blow you away. His catalogue of productions as well as his DJ sets were full of unexpected and transcendent moments of psychedelia, abstract dissonance, explosive volume, and full on freak outs. He was an enigma as an artist and has become a subject shrouded in mystery as a man. If you listen closely to this mix, I'm sure you can find some real insight into the musical spirit of this very inspirational and influential Chicago underground legend.

15. JDub Vinylcast 004 - Soulstice

JDub Vinylcast 004 - Soulstice

Set the way back machine to 1998 and the mixtape that sums up an era for me. With the help of some close chums we put together this mixtape DIY style complete with graphic design work from Ray Nolan, photography by Tim Fromer, and the mix itself for which I put in quite a bit of work for those days. The Chicago underground was smashing it hard at that time and I lived in a massive loft with a crew of DJ's all pushing hard to break out into the touring circuit which we all did. And I believe this was the mix that put me on the radar in a lot of places I would eventually play. Tracks here from Blair, Derrick Carter, Constipated Monkeys, Eurythmics, Eddie Amador, and Hebert on the shortlist. Just like Shelter Nightclub in Chicago (which is where the photo was taken) those days are gone forever but the effects are everlasting. I even left the old A Side/B Side break in there! Hope you dig it.

18. J-Dub Vinylcast 012 - DJ Colette - Two of Worlds Live @ Karma Nightclub Chicago USA Side A

J-Dub Vinylcast 012 - DJ Colette - Two of Worlds Live @ Karma Nightclub Chicago USA Side A

Digging deep for this very rare set from Chicago house icon DJ Colette. Colette was an integral part of the house scene in 90s Chicago as a vocalist, promoter, host, and dj at top clubs like Shelter, Smart Bar, Red Dog, RedNoFive, and Karma. Along with partner Eric Urenn, she started her legendary Material nights with residents Josh Werner, Scott Song, Diz, DJ Heather, and J-Dub initially at Shelter and eventually settling down at RedNoFive. Colette's career took off once she combined her powerful and unique vocal style with her undeniable dj skills. This classic set showcases her growing confidence as a performer and singular talent in one of Chicago's best rooms at that time. Hope you dig this one!

20. J-Dub Vinylcast 006 - Carnival

J-Dub Vinylcast 006 - Carnival

No. 6 in my vinyl cast series is Carnival originally released as part of Most Wanted Entertainment's mixtape catalogue in late 1998. My brother Gene Farris had a residency at the legendary Industry Nightclub which I played very early on. My nights at Industry were the launch pad for all my future excursions across Canada and I'm forever grateful to Gavin Bryan, Ronnie Ferst, Nnamdi Gryphon, my brother Carlos Sosa and the whole Toronto crew of old that made that city my second home for many years. Cheers to you! Nothing but sweet memories of a sweet time.
