Dead Sea Drying - A new low point for earth

The Dead Sea is one of the great ecological treasures of the world - a super salty lake that captures the waters of the River Jordan in a mountainous landscape between Israel, Jordan and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. It's the lowest point on earth - nearly half a kilometre below sea level - and for years there's been a fear that the sea might live up to its name and die as the countries of the Middle East drain the river system for precious drinking water. But if the sea isn't exactly dying - scientists say the water's too dense to ever disappear entirely - it is shrinking at an alarming rate of more than a metre a year. Our Correspondent Kevin Connolly went to watch it... Aired on the Today Program 040716.

Munich Olympian walker still walking at 76 BBC World Service

The opening of the Olympic games in London later this summer will mark not just the beginning of the sporting world's greatest festival but also the fortieth anniversary of one of its darker moments. At the Munich Games in 1972 Palestinian gunmen murdered eleven members of the Israeli team after infiltrating the Olympic village and taking them hostage. Among the Israeli athletes who survived the attack was Shaul Ladany a world champion race walker who'd already survived the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps. Now at 76 he celebrates life by walking his own age in kilometres every year. Was difficult to keep up with him...

Auschwitz Liberation 70th Anniversary

A report prepared in advance for Today Program: No-one can be exactly sure how many men women and children perished in the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz near the City of Krakow - but we know it was enough to make the place an enduring symbol of the evils of Nazism and of Hitler's attempt to wipe out the Jews of Europe. But we know the numbers were staggering. More than a million Jewish men women and children were murdered - either in the gas chambers or through starvation, overwork and brutality. Many others perished too. Today a ceremony at Auschwitz will mark the 70th anniversary of the camp's liberation by the Red Army and representatives of governments from many parts of the world will gather to hear the stories of the hundreds of survivors who'll be there. But as our Correspondent Kevin Connolly who'll be at the ceremony reports, there was a time when the survivors found it much harder to get anyone to listen to their shocking stories.

Israel as Start Up Nation - Today Program

Israel likes to think of itself as the ‘start-up’ nation and there is evidence that it’s better than most other countries at getting small high-tech businesses off the ground and on to the stock exchanges of the world. Our guest business editor for the week Rohan Silva wondered if that success might be down to the Israeli government’s creation of a post called chief scientist. It is not as the suggests a kind of boffin-in-chief sitting in a laboratory – the main role is to create what he calls an eco-system of business, technology and finance to help new small firms grow. We sent our Middle East Correspondent Kevin Connolly to find out more.

Lawrence of Arabia BBC R4

2011 has been a historic year in the Middle East. It is exactly 90 years since the British government called the Cairo conference of 1921 and sketched out the new middle east they wanted to build on the ruins of the Turkish empire. In those days the driving force for change was the vision of a handful of colonial officials led by TE Lawrence ... Lawrence of Arabia. So on the anniversary of one of Lawrence's finest hours Middle East Correspondent Kevin Connolly and I traveled to Jordan to look at his legacy. Originally broadcast on the BBC's Radio 4 World Tonight program on the 14 of December 2011.

A story I produced for the BBC's radio 4 Today program: The Holocaust in which 6 million jews died remains for most Israelis one of history's defining events....Every year thousands of Israeli high school students make a kind of pilgrimage here to learn more about it....and the country sends many of its army officers here on official tours too.Our Middle East Correspondent Kevin Connolly was given rare access to one of those official delegations in Poland.

While the Arab Spring swept the middle east the Kingdom of Jordan has remained largely untouched. Rising food and electricity prices have sparked demonstrations but protesters have not asked for regime change but for reforms.

Kibbutz Caviar BBC R4 Broadcating House 160214

For years Caviar was God’s joke, the slippery little grey pearls which are the very essence of luxury came only from countries bordering the Caspian Sea - and that meant either the Soviet Union or the Ayatollah's Iran, perhaps the two least luxury-loving societies in all of history. Now a Kibbutz in northern Israel has entered the market for the world’s most precious food’s. In its own way the Kibbutz is an equally unlikely source, founded as it was by zealous socialist Zionists pioneers. The BBC’s Middle East correspondent Kevin Connolly reports…

A view on Syria from the Golan Heights

There are immense difficulties and dangers in going in to Syria to report on how the war is going, but its even harder to see where it might be leading. There's a growing sense in the Middle East that the conflict might be a catalyst for sweeping changes in the region. After all, ISIS militants have already effectively erased the frontier between Syria and Iraq...who will take responsibility for restoring it - and when and in what circumstances. Many of the borders of the Middle East were drawn by Britain and France at the end of the First World War and some are looking distinctly shaky. Our Correspondent Kevin Connolly has been to the Golan Heights where a line of separation divides Syria from Israeli-occupied territory to see what the future looks like from there.

Today program report on Jonathan Pollard 10 Jan 14

Israeli politicians have been campaigning for the release from US jail of Jonathan Pollard more or less since he was sentenced to serve life in prison in 1987 on espionage charges. Pollard was a navy intelligence officer, was convicted of passing classified information to Israel. Recently the prospects of his release were raised as part of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process to appease right wing Israelis for the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. This is a report I produced for BBC Radio4 Today program which aired in January 2014.
